The first Father’s Day we were a real blended family was the Father’s Day after we had Beach-Ball. To say thanks to the guy who was at the center of our madness, I organized a scavenger hunt. What man wouldn’t love to be dragged out of the house to run around the city with his crazy family on a nice Sunday morning?!?! The perfect gift, right?
At breakfast BC was given an envelope with a clue in it. There was one for each of the 4 kids. The clues were designed to lead him to their special spot in the city; a place identified with the things BC did with that kid. Once he figured it out we drove to the spot, the child presented him with their gift & then he got his next clue. I remember Alexis (#4, counting backwards, her's was first ) was the book store. Conner (#3) the skate park, Fisher (#2) the shoreline trail, and Beach (#1) the well at the park. Fisher until we all showed up had been an only child so at four years old he was so glad to announce to everybody he was number 2!!! And Alex and Conner something close to 13 & 9 were more than happy to laugh about it, and even encourage it..."What number are you Fish?" hahahaha
Beach do you have something to say? |
What I remember most about that day was how the whole thing got derailed for a few hours on the shoreline when we stumbled upon 2 lost dogs. We spent 2 hours tracking down the owner and returning them. I’d have to say that one should have been 1.5 and it should have been mine because my special spot in the city with BC is with BC; dad, step-dad, morning jerk who spits snot in the sink, lover boy (those 2 shouldn’t be next to each other!), guy who opens-fixes-squashes things, and savor of lost dogs. It also helps that he ‘looks like a man’.
Over the years I have thought about recreating that special day for him but I figure maybe Father’s Day should be the one day he isn’t out doing something special of each of us maybe just maybe I should let him choose, no, that’s just plain crazy I want to do that again it was really fun…
