this time

It was short and sweet over the phone me admitting to Josh, one of my best friends, my Desert Island Guy, you know the person you would choose to be stuck with when push comes to shove, that my diabetes is out of control and I am feeling lost.  He knows without me saying it I mean I am scared.  The pep talk, the brave act of telling me I might consider limiting my coffee intake, the gentle voice of a man I trust running through all the to do’s and don’t do’s, again without belittling without judgment without saying ‘you know what to do just do it’.  The whole conversation he was making his way to me, down the canyon so I could drop him off at the airport.  I am the anchor who gets stuff like this done.  I get called in when things blow up and time matters but no one wants to be lectured about it.  His mom has been making frantic phone calls to me all morning "Josh missed his flight & won't answer his phone."  I have one job; to get Josh to the airport.

The ride to the airport was also short (with him behind the wheel), but sweet? not so much.  Running notoriously late for this his second attempt today to fly out of SLC the threat of missing this plane too was very real.  I don’t think I have (been) driven that fast in over 2 decades.   Every once in a while he would turn to look at me and smile.  “You don’t normally scare me.” I say laughing and halfway closing my eyes.  I flinch as he speeds weaving in and out of traffic.
“Reminds you of high school doesn’t it?” He answers and turns up the radio.  He is in heaven tormenting me like this.  Shorts, t-shirt, ball hat, he looks like high school and he wears it well.
I lean in so he can hear me against the rush of the down windows and the music which just happens to be playing one of my most favorite songs of all time, “If I would have known I was going to die today I would have eaten what I wanted for breakfast.”
“You’re not going die today.” He says but the grin on his face is more serous than humorous.  He takes a turn at mock speed swerves around 2 other cars.   It is surreal like a video game.  When he bought this car as a reclaimed salvage he told me he thought someone had died in it.  I thought about the new front end crash tests being done & the epic failures all around, about the seat of death.  It reminds me I want to live and I think somehow that was the whole point.  Josh knows how to speak so I will listen, most often it doesn’t involve words.

We cut it so close he instructed me to not leave the airport until he knew whether or not he would be allowed to board.  He called just as I was rounding the last bend, “I’ve got.  We’re good…”  Yes Sir, I believe we are and I drove his car home, windows down, stereo up, doing the speed limit the whole way.

meet head

Hair controlled.
Toe on ice.
Killing time with Ghost Hunters until Intersquad meet.
Hanging with her cohorts.
Tomorrow they will go over the result in practice.
All that mattered tonight was answering the question: could she nail that pesky squat on from low bar to high bar when the pressure is on?  And yes folks, turns out she can.
Major WIN for the one eyed wonder!!!!
...Fumbled a bit on the chocolate coating but overall that was a solid performance... and the rest comes out in the wash.

dear john,

 Dear Breakfast Cereal,

Regretfully, we cannot see each other anymore.  It’s not you, it’s me.  When we hooked up I was just a kid and didn't know what I was looking for or who I was.  You have many great qualities, you are so much more than fortified.   My parents love you, my kids love you.  With fruit and skim milk you are a well balanced meal and yet it is not working for me.  I find you delicious and filling when we are together but when you leave you take everything from me.  I become empty like a zombie.  I shake, I sweat, my headaches, all I can do is sleep.  I need the breakfast I choose to lift me up not tear me down.  I need to be supported in the areas of my life which happen after 9:45 a.m.  I know I have said this all before and it is I, who keeps coming back for more.  Please excuse me for saying so, but you are so quick and easy it is why I find myself returning over and over to you, out of convince and it is I, not you, who pays the price for this later.

Further more we have always know this relationship must end.  We knew from the start we had no future since you are not a locally sustainable product.

When we see each other in the kitchen let’s both agree to be friendly for the sake of the children.

Sincerely,

Misty

cool clear water

Beach's blisters all taped for a little hike up Donut Falls.
Touch that, get this
Mountain raspberries and mountain views

Foot Note: It only hurts when I step on something...lol
And yes, hiking was my idea.

home school, ready set

Me: I am starting Beach on school on Monday and since you guys will still be in town I need you to cooperate.
BC (sounding offended): What do we have to do?
Me: Well, I need you to keep the distractions to a minimum.
BC: Of course. But you always act like you can't do school if other people are around.  You need to just do it and not care what else is going on.  It's not as difficult as you make it.

[5 minutes later]

BC: Do you guys want to go float the Weber River on Monday?
Me: Do you remember me telling you we are starting school on Monday?
BC: School can't start on the river?

Mrs. K's b-day, broken glass party on the road

We got a last minute call to join Mrs. K celebrating her birthday by cooking herself dinner :)  We abandoned our other plans to go see a movie under the stars at the state capital, made a new batch of R & B farm fresh salsa, cut some sunflower (happy birthday from the urban hood), snipped basil & Greek oregano, then collected a bag of just picked tomatoes and headed over for a spectacular dinner!!!
And drinks :)
Mrs. K and the kids during the singing of Happy Birthday.  This is Mrs. K as I know her: covered by her kids, the center of it all, with 2 papillas (sp? something Greek for pacifier...or it may be something really crass with her you never know), a phone, and good food.
Before dinner as the champagne flutes were being handed out we discussed good china & priceless stemware debating whether to use or not to use....so of course one got broken!
It's not a party until...we vacuum up broken glass.
A malfunctioning corkscrew called for tools.  This is Mr. K's tool box.  It is also why BC is their handyman.
Sometimes there is a magnificent photo of an evening and this fuzzy photo of Mrs. K blowing glow in the dark bubbles in the house while all the women around her urge her to not do it in the house because it may stain, is that perfect shot.
And we were right "look at the table!!!" (& the cake).
And look at even BC's concern while Mrs. K laughs on & reloads.
But we did finally get the bubbles outside and into the hands of more responsible people.
Thanks for the great night K Family.
And to all my friends who I told to meet me a capital: so sorry & how was the show?
